Launched in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained active.
